Designing whisky glassware is not about aesthetics alone. Every curve, weight and proportion affects how whisky smells, tastes and feels in the hand. The same applies to a bespoke glass water dropper. Precision matters.

Designing a Whisky Glass
At Angels' Share Glass Tom Young & Daughter Karen designed and made the Angels' Share Glass during lockdown 2020. The glass was born from the idea that the company didn't have its own spirits glass and so the designs were drawn up.
First, we had to understand how Whisky is enjoyed
Before any design work begins, you must understand the drinker.
Key considerations:
- Neat, with water, or both
- Slow sipping rather than quick drinking
- Focus on aroma as much as taste
A whisky glass must support nosing, sipping and gradual development in the glass. Although our glass is not shaped like a nosing glass it's pleasing in the hand, and our glass lids help to aid keeping in the aromas till ready to drink.
Let's Define the Purpose of the Glass
Not all whisky glasses serve the same role.
Decide early:
- Everyday drinking or tasting sessions
- Single malts, blends or cask strength
- Home use, gifting or professional tastings
Purpose drives shape and size.
We Considered Weight, Balance and Feel
A whisky glass should feel reassuring, not delicate.
Design considerations:
- Stable base to prevent tipping
- Comfortable weight in the hand
- Balanced centre of gravity
Whisky is about slowing down. The glass should encourage that.
Test, Make & Test Again
No whisky glass design is complete without testing. And many samples sometimes need to hit the waste bucket before they are ready to go
Testing includes:
- Using the glass to taste your spirit
- Checking for weaknesses
- Checking Asthetics and quality control
Refinement is ongoing until the glass performs consistently.
The same applies when designing a Bespoke Glass Water Dropper
A glass water dropper exists for control and accuracy.
The goal:
- A bespoke design for your brand or client
- Avoid over dilution with our one drop at a time pipette
- Support Brand recognition
It must feel purposeful, not decorative.
Think about length, colour, branding and finally packaging
A good dropper:
- Holds enough water for several additions
- Is long enough to reach the glass comfortably
- Does not overwhelm the tasting setup
Scale matters here.
How to Use the Dropper:
The small hole on theside controls the flow of water.
Key actions:
- Dip in a glass of water, allow water to suck up, which also allows the dropper to be narrow enough for single drops
- Gently hold over your glass
- Consistent release with gentle pressure to allow one drop at a time
This allows the drinker to stay in control.
Balance
Like a whisky glass, a dropper should feel balanced.
Design focus:
- Comfortable grip
- Even weight distribution
- Easy to use with one hand
It should feel natural, not fiddly.
Final Thoughts
Designing whisky glassware is a careful balance of tradition, science and hands-on testing. Every decision, from the curve of a bowl to the tip of a dropper, affects how whisky is experienced.
